Marc Chagall occupies an unusual position in twentieth-century art, drawing on Russian-Jewish folk culture, Hasidic mysticism, and the visual vocabulary of the Parisian avant-garde without fully belonging to any single movement. Born in Vitebsk, he settled in Paris in 1910, where he absorbed Cubism and Fauvism while retaining the village imagery, floating lovers, fiddlers, and livestock that became his enduring subjects.
