The Fabric Seller

Paul Serusier — French, 1864–1927 — Post-Impressionism, Les Nabis

Paul Sérusier was a French painter and theorist who served as the founding spokesman for Les Nabis, the symbolist brotherhood that emerged in Paris in the late 1880s. His pivotal work, a small landscape painted in 1888 at Pont-Aven under the direct guidance of Paul Gauguin, was carried back to fellow students at the Académie Julian and became known as 'The Talisman' — a near-abstract arrangement of pure color that crystallized the Nabis program.
