Raphael Sanzio — Italian, 1483–1520 — Italian High Renaissance
Raphael Sanzio occupies a central place in the High Renaissance alongside Leonardo and Michelangelo, the third figure in the trinity that defined classical European painting. Born in Urbino and trained under his father and likely Perugino, he absorbed the clarity of Umbrian painting before moving to Florence around 1504, where he studied the compositions of Leonardo and the anatomy of Michelangelo.
