Henry Ward Ranger — American, 1858–1916 — American Tonalism
Henry Ward Ranger was a central figure in American Tonalism and the founding spirit of the Old Lyme art colony in Connecticut, which he helped establish in 1899. Trained in New York and shaped by extended study of the Barbizon painters during travels in Holland and France, he sought a distinctly American landscape idiom rooted in the wooded interiors and quiet coastal terrain of New England.
