Howard Chandler Christy — American, 1872–1952 — American Illustration / Academic Portraiture
Howard Chandler Christy was an American illustrator and portrait painter whose career spanned the golden age of magazine illustration and the interwar society portrait tradition. He first gained recognition for war reportage drawings from the Spanish-American War, published in Scribner's, Harper's, and Leslie's. By the early 1900s he had established the 'Christy Girl,' an idealized feminine type that rivaled the Gibson Girl in popular currency and shaped commercial imagery for two decades.
