Emile Claus was the leading figure of Belgian Luminism, a late variant of Impressionism distinguished by an intense preoccupation with sunlight and atmospheric color. Born in Sint-Eloois-Vijve in West Flanders, he trained at the Antwerp Academy and settled at Villa Zonneschijn along the Lys river, where the surrounding landscape became his lifelong subject.
