Lagrenée the Elder trained under Carle Van Loo and won the Prix de Rome in 1749, beginning a career that would carry him from Paris to the Russian imperial court and back. He served as director of the French Academy in Rome from 1781 to 1787 and later as keeper of the Louvre's paintings.
