Carl Fredrik Hill is regarded as one of the most original Swedish landscape painters of the nineteenth century, his reputation steadily rising in the decades following his death. Trained at the Royal Swedish Academy of Fine Arts, he settled in France in 1873, where he absorbed the lessons of Corot and the Barbizon school before developing a distinctly personal approach to landscape, particularly along the Seine and Oise.
