The Butterfly And The Cat
Lilly Martin Spencer — American, 1822–1902 — American Genre Painting
Lilly Martin Spencer was among the most popular and commercially successful American genre painters of the mid-nineteenth century, and one of the few women of her generation to sustain a professional career as a painter while supporting a large family. Working primarily in Cincinnati and later in New York and Newark, she specialized in domestic scenes—kitchens, parlors, mothers with children—rendered with close observation, gentle humor, and a sure handling of still-life detail.
