Annibale Carracci — Italian, 1560–1609 — Italian Baroque
Annibale Carracci was a Bolognese painter whose reform of late Mannerist excess helped establish the foundations of Baroque painting. With his brother Agostino and cousin Ludovico, he founded the Accademia degli Incamminati in Bologna around 1582, advocating direct study from life alongside renewed attention to the Venetian colorists and the draftsmanship of Raphael and Michelangelo.
