The Bridge At Grez

Robert Vonnoh — American, 1858–1933 — American Impressionism

Robert Vonnoh was among the first American painters to adopt French Impressionist methods and bring them home with conviction. Trained at the Massachusetts Normal Art School and later at the Académie Julian in Paris, he worked in the artists' colony at Grez-sur-Loing in the late 1880s, where he shifted from academic tonalism to broken color and outdoor observation. His landscapes from this period, particularly the poppy field paintings, are considered early landmarks of American Impressionism.
