Jules Scalbert was a French academic painter who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris under Alexandre Cabanel and Jean-Léon Gérôme, two of the most influential figures in nineteenth-century academic instruction. He exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français beginning in the 1870s, earning honorable mentions and medals over the course of his career.
