Fra Filippo Lippi — Italian, c. 1406–1469 — Italian Early Renaissance
A Carmelite friar who became one of the central painters of the Florentine Quattrocento, Fra Filippo Lippi worked under the patronage of Cosimo de' Medici and bridged the devotional clarity of Masaccio with a new tenderness of feeling. His altarpieces and Madonnas are marked by clear linear contour, pale luminous flesh, and an unusual psychological intimacy between figures, particularly in the recurring motif of the Virgin and Child attended by angels.
