Harold Gilman — British, 1876–1919 — Camden Town Group / British Post-Impressionism
Harold Gilman was a founding member of the Camden Town Group and, in 1913, the first president of the London Group. Trained at the Slade School and influenced early on by Whistler and Velázquez, he reoriented his practice after encountering Van Gogh and Gauguin at Roger Fry's Post-Impressionist exhibitions, adopting a brighter palette and a thicker, more deliberate touch.
