Thomas Eakins — American, 1844–1916 — American Realism
Thomas Eakins is widely regarded as one of the most uncompromising realists in American painting. Working primarily in Philadelphia, where he taught at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts until his dismissal in 1886 over his use of fully nude models, Eakins built his practice on direct observation, anatomical study, and a working knowledge of perspective and photography.
