Suprematism Nonobjective Composition
Kasimir Malevich — Russian, 1879–1935 — Suprematism
Kasimir Malevich was a founding figure of geometric abstraction and the originator of Suprematism, the radical movement he announced in Petrograd in 1915. Trained in Moscow and initially working through Impressionist and Cubo-Futurist idioms, he reduced painting to elementary forms—square, circle, cross, rectangle—floating against white grounds. The Black Square, first shown at the 0,10 Exhibition, became a foundational image of twentieth-century abstraction, proposing painting as the expression of pure feeling rather than depiction.
