Hans Thoma was a German painter associated with the late nineteenth-century realist tradition, known for landscapes, portraits, and allegorical scenes rooted in the Black Forest region of his birth. Trained at the Karlsruhe Academy and influenced by his time in Düsseldorf, Paris, and Munich, he developed a deliberately plain manner that drew on Courbet's realism and the linear clarity of older German masters such as Dürer and Altdorfer.
