Emil Nolde — German-Danish, 1867–1956 — German Expressionism
Emil Nolde was among the most forceful colorists of German Expressionism, briefly associated with Die Brücke in 1906–1907 before pursuing an independent path from his isolated studio in the marshlands of northern Schleswig. His work is characterized by saturated, often clashing color, loose brushwork, and an emphasis on emotional and spiritual intensity over formal refinement.
