Vojtěch Hynais trained at the Vienna Academy and spent formative years in Paris, where he absorbed the polished surface and theatrical composition of French academic painting. He is best known in Czech cultural memory for the curtain of the National Theatre in Prague, completed in 1883 after the original by František Ženíšek was destroyed by fire.
