Sir William Quiller Orchardson — Scottish, 1832–1910 — Victorian narrative painting
Orchardson was a Scottish painter known for psychologically charged narrative scenes set in elegant interiors, often depicting marital tension, social estrangement, or quiet domestic drama. Trained at the Trustees' Academy in Edinburgh under Robert Scott Lauder alongside John Pettie and William McTaggart, he settled in London in 1862 and became a leading figure of late Victorian academic painting, elected to the Royal Academy in 1877 and knighted in 1907.
