Jan Davidszoon De Heem — Dutch, 1606–1684 — Dutch and Flemish Baroque still life
Jan Davidszoon de Heem worked between two of the seventeenth century's great still-life traditions, training in Utrecht and Leiden before settling in Antwerp in 1636, where he joined the Guild of Saint Luke and absorbed the lush, decorative idiom of Flemish painting. He is best known for elaborate pronkstillevens — display pieces crowded with fruit, oysters, Venetian glass, silver vessels, lobsters, and curling lemon peels — rendered with meticulous observation and a controlled, jewel-like palette.
