Still Life With Blue Vase
Soren Emil Carlsen — Danish-American, 1853–1932 — American Impressionism / Tonalism
Emil Carlsen emigrated from Copenhagen to the United States in 1872, bringing with him a training in architecture and a deep admiration for the seventeenth-century Dutch and French still-life traditions, particularly the work of Chardin. He became the leading American practitioner of the still-life genre in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, painting quiet arrangements of copper pots, fish, fruit, and porcelain with a restrained palette and softly modulated light.
