Philip de László was among the leading society portraitists of the early twentieth century, painting royalty, aristocracy, statesmen, and ecclesiastical figures across Europe and the Americas. Born in Budapest and trained at the National Academy there before further study in Munich and Paris, he established his reputation with a portrait of Pope Leo XIII in 1900 and settled permanently in London in 1907, becoming a British subject in 1914.
