Edmund Osthaus — American, 1858–1928 — American Sporting Art
Edmund Henry Osthaus was the foremost American painter of sporting dogs in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, known particularly for his portraits of pointers and setters at work in the field. Born in Hildesheim, Germany, he trained at the Düsseldorf Royal Academy before emigrating to the United States in 1883, eventually settling in Toledo, Ohio, where he directed the Toledo Academy of Fine Arts.
