Elihu Vedder — American, 1836–1923 — American Symbolism
Elihu Vedder was an American Symbolist painter and illustrator best known for his visionary, allegorical compositions and his sustained engagement with literary and mystical subject matter. Born in New York and trained briefly in the United States before extended study in Paris and Italy, he settled in Rome in 1867, where he spent most of his working life.
