Sir William Blackstone
Thomas Gainsborough — English, 1727–1788 — English Rococo and Portraiture
Gainsborough was among the foremost English portraitists of the eighteenth century and a founding member of the Royal Academy in 1768. Trained in London under the French engraver Hubert Gravelot, he absorbed Rococo elegance and the influence of Van Dyck, whose silvery palette and aristocratic poise inform much of his mature work. He worked in Sudbury, Ipswich, Bath, and finally London, building a fashionable clientele that included George III.
