Tom Thomson is the central figure in the development of a distinctly Canadian landscape painting tradition, though he died before the formal founding of the Group of Seven, with whom he is closely associated. Working primarily in Algonquin Provincial Park in Ontario, Thomson produced rapid oil sketches on small wood panels during canoe trips through the northern bush, later developing select studies into larger canvases in his Toronto studio.
