Andreas Achenbach was a leading figure of the Düsseldorf School and one of the most influential German landscape and marine painters of the nineteenth century. Trained at the Düsseldorf Academy under Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, he traveled extensively through the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and Italy, drawing on Dutch seventeenth-century precedents while pushing landscape painting toward greater naturalism and dramatic atmosphere.
