Ludolf Bakhuizen, Aka Ludolf Backhuysen — Dutch, 1630–1708 — Dutch Golden Age marine painting
Born in Emden, East Frisia, Bakhuizen settled in Amsterdam around 1650, where he initially worked as a calligrapher and merchant's clerk before turning to painting. He studied with Allaert van Everdingen and Hendrick Dubbels, and following the departure of the Van de Veldes for England in 1672, he became the leading marine painter in the Dutch Republic.
