Johan Hendrik Weissenbruch was a leading figure of the Hague School, the group of Dutch painters who revived a national landscape tradition in the second half of the nineteenth century. Trained at the Hague Academy and influenced by the seventeenth-century masters he studied at the Mauritshuis, he worked primarily in oil and watercolor, depicting the polders, beaches, and waterways of the Dutch lowlands.
