Carl Bloch was among the leading Danish painters of the later nineteenth century, best known today for a sustained body of religious painting that made his name well beyond Scandinavia. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen and shaped by years of study in Italy, he first attracted attention with genre scenes and historical subjects before turning decisively toward Christian narrative painting.
