Thomas Hart Benton — American, 1889–1975 — American Regionalism
Thomas Hart Benton was a central figure in the American Regionalist movement, which emerged in the 1930s as a deliberate counter to European modernism. Born in Neosho, Missouri, into a politically prominent family, Benton trained in Chicago and Paris before rejecting abstraction in favor of narrative scenes drawn from American rural and working life.
