Max Beckmann — German, 1884–1950 — German Expressionism / New Objectivity
Max Beckmann was among the most significant German painters of the twentieth century, working through the upheavals of two world wars and a forced exile that shaped the moral seriousness of his art. Trained in Weimar and active in Berlin and Frankfurt before the Nazi regime declared his work degenerate in 1937, he spent a decade in Amsterdam and his final years teaching in the United States.
