Jean-Paul Laurens was among the last major exponents of French academic history painting, working in a period when the genre was being eclipsed by Impressionism and its successors. Born in Fourquevaux to a modest family, he trained under Léon Cogniet and Alexandre Bida and built his reputation on large-scale historical and religious subjects, often drawn from the medieval church, the Inquisition, and the Merovingian past.
