Angelica Kauffmann — Swiss, 1741–1807 — Neoclassicism
Angelica Kauffmann was among the most accomplished history painters of the late eighteenth century and one of only two women among the founding members of the Royal Academy in London in 1768. Born in Chur, Switzerland, and trained in Italy, she absorbed the classical vocabulary then taking shape around Mengs and Winckelmann in Rome. Her practice spanned literary and mythological subjects, allegorical compositions, and a substantial portrait business serving Grand Tour patrons and English aristocracy.
