Self Portrait

Hyacinthe Rigaud — French, 1659–1743 — French Baroque

Hyacinthe Rigaud was the preeminent court portraitist of late seventeenth and early eighteenth-century France, defining the visual image of Bourbon royalty for two generations. Born in Perpignan and trained in Montpellier and Lyon before settling in Paris, he built his reputation on grand state portraits distinguished by exacting likeness, sumptuous handling of velvet, ermine, and embroidered silk, and a theatrical command of pose.
