Gustave Moreau — French, 1826–1898 — French Symbolism
Moreau was a central figure of French Symbolism, working in Paris during the second half of the nineteenth century while the Impressionists turned toward modern life. He took the opposite path, drawing on biblical, mythological, and literary sources to produce densely worked paintings of Salome, Oedipus, Orpheus, and Jupiter. His surfaces are jeweled and intricate, often combining precise figurative drawing with passages of near-abstract ornament, an approach that anticipated aspects of later twentieth-century painting.
