Description

San Zeno Polyptych

Andrea Mantegna — Italian, c.1431–1506 — Italian Early Renaissance

Andrea Mantegna was among the defining painters of the Italian Quattrocento, working primarily in Padua and, from 1460, as court artist to the Gonzaga family in Mantua. Trained in the workshop of Francesco Squarcione, he absorbed an early and lasting passion for Roman antiquity, which surfaces in the carved drapery, archaeological precision, and stone-like solidity of his figures.
