Saint Marks Church By Mathias J. Alten By Mathias J. Alten
Mathias Alten — German-American, 1871–1938 — American Impressionism
Mathias Alten emigrated from Germany to Grand Rapids, Michigan as a young man and became the most prominent painter associated with that city in the early twentieth century. Trained at the Académie Julian in Paris and influenced by his exposure to French Impressionism, he developed a loose, light-filled approach applied across a broad range of subjects: Michigan landscapes, agricultural scenes with working horses and cattle, harbors, gardens, and portraits.
