Cornelis van Poelenburgh was a Utrecht painter who became one of the founding figures of the first generation of Dutch Italianate landscapists. After training under Abraham Bloemaert, he traveled to Rome around 1617, where he joined the circle of northern artists working in the city and absorbed the influence of Adam Elsheimer and Paul Bril.
