Arthur Dove — American, 1880–1946 — American Modernism
Arthur Dove is generally credited as the first American painter to work in a fully abstract idiom, arriving at non-representational form around 1910, roughly contemporaneous with Kandinsky. A central figure in Alfred Stieglitz's circle alongside Georgia O'Keeffe and Marsden Hartley, Dove exhibited at the 291 gallery and later at An American Place.
