Charles Marion Russell was a self-taught painter, sculptor, and illustrator whose work documented the American West during its final frontier years. After leaving St. Louis at sixteen for Montana Territory, he worked as a wrangler and night herder, sketching constantly and absorbing the cowboy life he would later depict. He spent a winter among the Blood people in Alberta, an experience that informed his unusually attentive renderings of Plains Indian subjects.
