Robert Spencer was an American painter associated with the New Hope school of Pennsylvania Impressionism, though his subject matter set him apart from his colleagues. While other New Hope painters favored pastoral landscapes along the Delaware River, Spencer turned to the mills, tenements, and industrial waterfronts of small Pennsylvania towns, painting working-class architecture with a muted, atmospheric palette.
