Henryk Siemiradzki was a Polish academic painter who built his career between Rome, where he settled in 1872, and the Russian and Polish art worlds in which his reputation was made. Trained at the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, he specialized in large-scale historical and mythological scenes set in classical antiquity, often depicting episodes from early Christian Rome under Nero.
