Fidelia Bridges — American, 1834–1923 — American Pre-Raphaelitism
Fidelia Bridges was among the few women to achieve professional standing in nineteenth-century American art, recognized for delicate watercolors and oils depicting wildflowers, grasses, and birds observed at close range. Born in Salem, Massachusetts, she trained in Philadelphia under William Trost Richards, whose meticulous naturalism shaped her early practice. By the 1870s she had largely abandoned oil for watercolor, a medium then gaining critical acceptance, and was elected to the American Watercolor Society.
