Lucas Cranach The Elder — German, 1472–1553 — Northern Renaissance
Lucas Cranach the Elder was a central figure of the German Renaissance and one of the most prolific court painters of the sixteenth century. Appointed court artist to the Electors of Saxony in Wittenberg in 1505, he held the position for nearly fifty years, producing portraits, altarpieces, mythological subjects, and hunting scenes alongside a large workshop.
