John Wesley Jarvis — American, 1780–1840 — American Federal-era Portraiture
John Wesley Jarvis was among the most prolific portrait painters working in the early American republic, producing likenesses of military heroes, statesmen, and prominent merchants in New York, New Orleans, and other cities along the Eastern seaboard. Born in England and brought to Philadelphia as a child, he trained as an engraver before turning to oil portraiture, eventually establishing a busy New York studio in the early 1800s.
