Portrait Of Anne Dashwood (1743–1830) Later Countess Of Galloway

Joshua Reynolds — British, 1723–1792 — British Grand Manner

Joshua Reynolds was the leading English portraitist of the eighteenth century and the founding president of the Royal Academy of Arts in 1768. Trained in London and refined by a study trip to Italy from 1749 to 1752, he absorbed the lessons of Raphael, Michelangelo, and the Venetian colorists, then applied them to British sitters in what he called the Grand Manner — portraiture elevated by the compositional language of history painting.
