Portrait Of A Connecticut Clockmaker

Ralph Earl — American, 1751–1801 — American Colonial and Federal Portraiture

Ralph Earl was among the most accomplished portrait painters working in late eighteenth-century New England, producing likenesses of merchants, landowners, and political figures during the early years of the American republic. Born in Massachusetts, he trained largely without formal instruction before traveling to England in 1778, where he worked under Benjamin West and absorbed the conventions of British grand-manner portraiture.
