Nicolas de Largillière was among the most sought-after portraitists of late Baroque France, second in commercial standing only to his contemporary Hyacinthe Rigaud. Born in Paris and trained in Antwerp under the still-life painter Antoon Goubau, he absorbed the Flemish tradition of rich color and tactile surface before working briefly in London under Peter Lely.
